Leon Festinger's 1957 theory showed that when beliefs and actions clash, the brain fabricates excuses to restore comfort. In a famous experiment, participants paid $1 to lie enjoyed a boring task more than those paid $20—because insufficient external justification forced an internal attitude shift. Understanding this unconscious mechanism helps us see through our own biases in shopping, relationships, and politics.
